IPL 2023: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match number 61 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh played outstanding innings to secure a six-wicket win for KKR and keep their playoffs hopes alive.
CSK’s Opening Duo Gives a Solid Start
Electing to bat first, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway looked at ease in driving, cutting, and flicking off fast bowlers Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana to pick three fours in the first three overs.
After Gaikwad swept Chakaravarthy for four, the leg-spinner bounced back when he found a turn on leg-break which the right-handed batter tried to slog and top-edge flew to short third man. Chakravarthy broke through the important partnership for KKR, getting Ruturaj Gaikwad (17, 13 balls, 2×4) to edge one to Arora in the fourth over as CSK raced away to 31 in the fourth over.
Conway-Rahane Struggles to Score Runs
After Conway brought out a cover drive off Chakaravarthy for four, Ajinkya Rahane used Rana’s pace to late-dab past the third man for four and followed it up with an effortless loft over mid-on for six as Chennai signed off from Power-play with 52/1.
Conway got to change an lbw decision off Chakaravarthy when on 25 in the eighth over as replays showed the ball bouncing above stumps, but Rahane fell trying to force the pace, unable to clear the boundary off Chakravarthy.
Chennai plunged into trouble when Conway got a top edge on the pull off Shardul Thakur and was caught by deep square-leg in the tenth over. In the next over, an off-break from Sunil Narine went past Ambati Rayudu’s sweep and crashed into the stumps, The West Indian spinner then castled a struggling Moeen (1) to reduce CSK to 72 for 5 in the 11th over.
Dube & Jadeja Duo Shared 68 Runs Partnership
Dube ended a 41-ball no-boundary spree by launching an overpitched delivery from Suyash Sharma over extra cover for six. But Narine, Suyash and Chakaravarthy controlled the run flow.Dube began to attack by pulling Thakur for four, before he and Ravindra Jadeja smashed a six each over the leg-side on short balls from Suyash on either side of a no-ball, to amass 16 runs from the 17th over.
The duo shared 68-run stand for the sixth wicket to take CSK close to the 150-run mark, which at one point of time looked out of reach on a sluggish pitch. Spin duo of Narine (2/15) and Chakravarthy (2/36) were the pick of the bowlers for KKR and they were ably supported by Shardul Thakur (3-0-15-1) did and Vaibhav Arora (1/30). CSK were 99 for five after 16 overs as KKR bowlers, especially the spinners, kept things tight and struck at regular intervals.
Dube then took on Chakaravarthy by smoking a six over mid-wicket, before taking a brace twice. But Thakur pulled things back admirably by conceding only five runs, including a wide, in the 19th over. After Jadeja ramped a bouncer straight to short third man off Arora in the final over, Kolkata conceded only four runs on the last two balls, including a wide and no-ball, as Chennai picked only 14 runs off the last two overs.
Deepak Chahar’a Amazing Brought Early Breakthrough
CSK struck an early blow when Chahar got Rahmanullah Gurbaz (1) as he failed to keep his square-drive down and was well caught by Tushar Deshpande close to the boundary. After six overs, KKR were 46 for three with Chahar having picked up all the three wickets to fall — Gurbaz, Jason Roy (12) and Venkatesh Iyer (9). But CSK spinners — Ravindra Jadeja, Maheesh Theekshana and Moeen — could not do any damage after Deepak Chahar had provided the initial breakthroughs.
Rana-Rinku’s Partnership Costs CSK’s Victory
The pair of Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh stuck around to swat the spinner around the park with some typical cricketing shots. Rinku reached his fifty in just 39 balls as Nitish also got to his half-century in 38 balls. Rana remained unbeaten on 57 off 44 balls while Rinku made 54 off 43 deliveries. KKR finished at 147 for four in 18.3 overs with Rana leading from the front after making the most of a dropped chance.
Rana and Rinku, both left-handers, showed necessary skills and patience on a tacky pitch to negate the impact of CSK spinners after the home team had posted a moderate 144 for six in 20 overs. The match-winning partnership between Rana and Rinku ended when the latter was run out by a direct hit from Moeen Ali.
Rana got a life on 18 when Matheesha Pathirana dropped a catch running in from the boundary off Moeen. In the 13th over bowled by Moeen, Rana played two superb shots on the off-side to pick up boundaries and followed it up with a few more cracking strikes in the 15th over by Maheesh Theekshana. The defeat also puts on hold CSK’s chances of sealing a play-off berth as the home side is in second spot with 15 points. KKR, on the other hand, moved to 12 points with a match to play but their hopes rest on other results.
Conclusion
KKR’s victory against CSK has kept their playoffs hopes alive in the IPL 2023. Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh played crucial innings to guide KKR to a comfortable win. CSK’s spinners struggled to make an impact, and their chances of reaching the playoffs are now on hold. KKR’s next match will be crucial for their playoffs aspirations as they will rely on other results to determine their fate in the tournament.
MI VS RCB Match Highlights: In a thrilling encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Indians showcased their batting prowess as they successfully chased down a challenging target set by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Suryakumar Yadav’s explosive innings, accompanied by Nehal Wadhera’s crucial contribution, outshone the brilliant performances of RCB’s Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis. Let’s delve into the highlights of this high-scoring encounter.
Image: Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav plays a shot during the IPL 2023 cricket match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Tuesday, May 9
The Maxwell-Faf show
During RCB’s innings, Virat Kohli & Faf-Du-Plessi came into ground to open their 1st innings but unfortunately kohli caught behind while stepping out due to leading edge . Then Maxwell and du Plessis were on the crease & showed why they are rated as two of the most devastating batters in T20 cricket. Maxwell bludgeoned 68 runs off just 33 balls, featuring 8 fours and 4 sixes, while du Plessis contributed 65 runs off 41 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes. Their partnership of 120 runs off 62 balls propelled RCB to a challenging total of 199/6.
RCB had lost two early wickets, they were up against MI’s best spinner, Piyush Chawla, who was the biggest wicket-taker of Mumbai go wicket less yesterday and the onus was on them to set the target at the Mumbai ground where no total is safe enough. The home team had a missed opportunity when they dropped Du Plessis on zero. The RCB opener flicked a low full-toss from Jason Behrendorff uppishly but Nehal Wadhera put down a fairly routine catch at short midwicket.
Jason Behrendorff’s Early Strikes and Maxwell’s Dismissal:
MI’s left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff made an impact right from the start, claiming the crucial wickets of Virat Kohli and Anuj Rawat early in the innings. Behrendorff’s two quick breakthroughs reduced RCB to 16/2 in the third over. However, it was his dismissal of Glenn Maxwell, who was in tremendous form, that provided the much-needed breakthrough for MI. Maxwell’s innings was brought to an end at 68 runs, courtesy of a slower delivery from Behrendorff.
“Me and Faf have had some nice partnerships, so it was very enjoyable,” said Maxwell. “I think it was around a 200-wicket, but there were a few balls that kept low. You try and play the conditions as much as you can. I was really committed today and super positive in my mindset. I tried to play the field and tried to back my instincts.”
Chawla Went Wicketless
Chawla has been MI’s standout spinner this season, he went wicketless for 41 runs. In a bid to control the RCB top order, captain Rohit gave him the new ball in powerplay. But, he was unable to make any impression on Maxwell and Du Plessis. The RCB captain was hitting him down the ground while Maxwell was messing him up with his strokes square & reverse sweep of the wicket.
The difference they make to the RCB batting was seen in how MI pulled things back once their partnership was broken in the 13th over. After Behrendorff deceived Maxwell with a slower ball, MI picked up two more quick wickets. Kumar Karthikeya bowled an excellent 14th over, conceding just five runs and getting the wicket of Mahipal Lomror. Cameron Green provided further lift to the hosts with the scalp of Du Plessis on the first ball of the 15th over. From 131/2 in 12 overs, it was 152/5 after 15 overs.
It ensured the visitors couldn’t capitalise on the slog overs. Going at nearly 11 per over till the 12th, RCB could manage just one 10-plus over of their last seven — the 15 runs they got in the 18th over off with Dinesh Karthik hitting two fours and one six off left-arm spinner Kumar Karthikeya.
Mumbai Batters Gave a Solid Start in Powerplay
In 2nd innings when mumbai came to bat all eyes were on Rohit Sharma while MI was chasing in their home ground . After dropping himself down to No.3 against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, the MI captain, who had managed only five runs in his last four IPL innings, returned to the top of the order. Ishan kishan who was recently selected for WTC final 2023 gave a fiery start . But Wanindu Hasaranga removed both MI openers — Ishan departed after a sizzling 21 ball 42; Rohit’s lean IPL 2023 patch continued as he fell for 7 off 8.
Surya – Wadhhera’s 140 run partnership
Then Enter Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera. The game’s trajectory changed as SKY entered beast mode. As Faf said after the match, ‘He’s one of the best. When he gets going ,he’s really difficult to bowl to. You can’t shut him down.’ Suryakumar Yadav and Wadhera kept the equation in check with a smart display of batting, finding the boundaries by picking their gaps well before shifting gears. They took control after coming together at 52/2 to help MI reach 99/2 in 10 overs.
The senior pro shifted into top gear from there on to reach his half-century in 26 balls. The century of their partnership was reached in 53 balls to take the total to 150 in 13.3 overs. In pursuit of a target of 200, Yadav smashed 83 off 35 balls (7×4 6×6) at a strike rate of 237.14 to win the Player of the Match award. When he finally fell, trying to hit his seventh six, MI needed just 8 off 26 balls to win. The third-wicket partnership between Surya and Wadhera (52* off 34 balls) was worth 140 off 66 balls and took the match away from RCB at a very rapid clip.
Conclusion:
The Mumbai Indians’ commanding chase, led by Suryakumar Yadav’s explosive innings, overshadowed the impressive batting display of Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. With their emphatic win, Mumbai Indians jumped to the third position in the IPL standings. This thrilling encounter further solidified the reputation of the IPL as a platform for exhilarating cricket and showcased the talent and skill of the players involved.
Gujarat Titans fire to sweep away Lucknow Super Giants at Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Titans put on a dominant display against the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League, with Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 94 and Wriddhiman Saha’s 81 leading them to a total of 227-2, the fourth highest total this season. Lucknow’s Kyle Mayers had a quick-fire 48 at the top of the innings, but was dismissed by Rashid Khan in the ninth over after a brilliant catch. Despite Quinton de Kock’s 70, Lucknow’s middle-order crumbled, finishing at 171-7, allowing Gujarat to seal an impressive win & secure top place in points table with 16 points.

Gujarat’s Dominant Display In Power play
Gujarat Titans started their innings at an explosive pace, with Saha and Gill adding 142 runs for the first wicket in only 12.1 overs. This set the franchise record for the highest partnership for any wicket, and was the second-best stand for any team for any wicket in this IPL. The Saha-Gill pair went ballistic to add 78 runs in the first six overs, scoring at 13 runs per over.

Saha led the charge with a couple of fours and a six off Mohsin Khan in the first two overs, while Gill smacked a six over long-on off Krunal Pandya. Saha continued his assault on Mohsin in the left-armer’s second over, hitting him for a couple of sixes and fours to take the defending champions past the 50-run mark inside four overs. In the last over of the powerplay, Saha brought up his fifty off only 20 balls with a six off Yash Thakur.
The Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter continued to hammer the Lucknow bowlers, hitting an overall four sixes and 10 fours to make 81 from 43 balls. Gill opened up tad late but finished close to what would have been a splendid maiden IPL century, hitting seven sixes and two fours in his 51-ball knock.

GT’s charge continued post the powerplay as 43 runs in the next four overs took their total to 121 without any damage at the halfway mark. Saha and Gill’s century stand came up in the ninth over itself with the latter hitting Ravi Bishnoi inside out for a six over cover. Gill took 29 balls to bring up his fourth fifty of this IPL, which came in the 12th over.
Despite the strong start from Gujarat, the Lucknow Super Giants were not out of the game yet. They knocked off 50 runs from the target in only four overs with both Mayers and de Kock finding momentum. Mayers began with three consecutive fours off Hardik Pandya in the second over, and the third from Mohammad Shami yielded 19 runs with de Kock hitting a couple of fours and Mayers getting a six and a four. Mayers was also severe on Rashid Khan in the fifth, hitting him for a six and a four to collect 14 runs as LSG reached 72 for no loss after the powerplay.

Rashid Khan completed a wonderful running catch to dismiss Kyle Mayers and end the opening stand. The Afghan player covered a distance of 26 metres from deep square leg and managed to hold on to the ball while diving to his right, getting rid of Mayers for 48 off 32 balls (7x4s, 2x6s) off Mohit Sharma. But de Kock continued to flourish, flicking Hardik powerfully over midwicket for a six to take LSG to 102 for one halfway.

Boult gives perfect start
Rajasthan have got a brilliant start in the defence as Boult has got two wickets in his first over. What a brilliant over that was. Two out swinging balls getting two SRH batters. First, it was Abhishek, who was bowled on the second ball of the innings and then Tripathi was caught out as Holder completed a stunning catch at wide slip.

RR finish strong at 203
Rajasthan have finished well at 203/5 in the 20 overs. A powerful display by Sanju Samson’s team as they become the first team to get a 200-plus total in IPL 2023. But they might be thinking that they could have gone somewhere around 220. Buttler and Jaiswal provided a blistering start as they got 85 /1 in the first 6. Both smashed fifty as RR were set for a big total. Samson joined the party too with a 55-run knock. SRH managed to restrict them a bit with Farooqi and Natarajan taking two each. So, this will take some effort by SRH to get there. Will see what happens next. Back with the chase.
APRIL 02, 20235:11 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Samson falls
And Samson falls after hitting a fifty. He was looking to go for the glory shot but got caught at deep mid-wicket. Abhishek at the fence takes a brilliant balanced catch to dismiss the RR captain.

Parag goes back, Samson hits 50
Natarajan has got the wicket of Riyan Parag as he could not play a notable hand today. This was on a good length as he swings his bat wildly only to get caught at short third. Meanwhile, Samson has got to his fifty in 29 balls. Hetmyer comes in now.
APRIL 02, 20234:54 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
RR 170/3 after 16
We now head to the second time-out of the innings as RR are at 170/3 after 16 overs. Samson is just 1 short of his fifty at the moment and will look to take his team to somewhat around 220. Can SRH restrict them? Death overs loading in Hyderabad…
APRIL 02, 20234:44 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Umran gets Padikkal
Umran has cleaned up Padikkal with a 149.2 kmph thunderbolt. This was on a good length but stayed low as it got through the batters’ defences. Meanwhile, 150 up for Rajasthan inside 14 overs. Samson is still out there and Parag has joined him. Hetmyer is in the dugout. How much can they get?
APRIL 02, 2023 4:37 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Jaiswal falls after fifty
And Jaiswal now has to walk back after that well-made fifty. Farooqi gets another RR opener and for the same score- 54 as they go 2 down. This was short as Jaiswal looked to pull it on the leg side but gets a toe end as he finds the fielder at deep mid-wicket.
APRIL 02, 2023 4:32 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Fifty for Jaiswal
And now Jaiswal gets to his fifty as well. A 34-ball fifty for the young Southpaw. RR have made 135/1 in 12 overs. Still handsome runs on the board but the momentum has come down a little in the previous few overs.
APRIL 02, 2023 4:23 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Samson, Jaiswal keeping the momentum going
Samson and Jaiswal are keeping the momentum going and are getting big overs. RR are at 122/1 after 10 overs and they are all set for a mammoth score. Can SRH apply some breaks?

APRIL 02, 2023 4:03 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Buttler goes back after fifty
Ohh, there’s the first one. Farooqi has managed to get rid of the dangerous Buttler. The RR opener smashed the bowlers for fun around the park and hit a 20-ball 50. But he has to go back for a well-made 54. RR are 85/1 after the first 6. Gosh, this is some serious start.
APRIL 02, 2023 3:53 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360

SRH look for solid start
Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal are out in the middle and they look for a solid start. Bhuvneshwar starts for SRH. Will Buttler explode in the powerplay itself? Buttler vs Umran will also be some match-up to watch. Fiery batting vs Express pace.

Pitch report
This is a good batting surface. Teams have got handsome scores here and there is also help for pacers generally at the venue. On today’s pitch, Manjrekar says, “The surface looks pristine, somewhat like how an English pitch would be, the presence of dried grass and white in color. There won’t be turn for the spinners straight up. Hyderabad has been a high-scoring ground. Teams that have won chasing have an average total of 190. So that tells you this is a venue where you are better off chasing, because sometimes in the pressure to get runs on the board you end up with just 150-160.”

Punjab win
And the inevitable has happened. Punjab win by 7 runs as the rain gods did allow the game to go further. Good start by them. They first got off to a decent total with everyone contributing. In the second innings, KKR tried staying in the chase but were little far. Russell and Venkatesh were keeping them in hunt but after the fell, it looked difficult. The rain came down as players went off. So PBKS get a win as we now move to the other contest of the day between LSG vs DC. Join Aditya Kukalyekar for that coverage here.

APRIL 01, 2023 6:41 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Raza gets breakthrough
As only when they were looking to, Raza has found a crucial wicket of KKR captain Nitish Rana. This was a quick, good length ball outside off stump. It was asked to be cut but Rana could not keep it down, and he could have found the gap as he gifts it to the backward point. Rinku Singh comes in.

APRIL 01, 20235:04 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360

And Chakaravarthy has got his first as well. He has cleaned up the PBKS skipper on this quicker and straighter one. Dhawan probably did not expect it to come as quick as he was trying to work the ball on the leg side. Punjab are 4 down now and Sam Curran comes in. Two new batters and KKR are coming into it now.

We would have bowled first as well. We have got a balanced team and hopefully we will do good. The team preparation has been decent and we will aim to dominate the game, hoping for a great season ahead. We are eager to win the title and I am looking to lead my team from the front. My overseas players are – Bhanuka, Nathan Ellis, and Sam Curran, don’t remember the fourth name.
APRIL 01, 2023 3:06 PM (IST) Posted by tadalafil360
Nitish at toss
We will be bowling first, it has rained in the last two days so there would be some moisture in the wicket. (On captaincy) I am excited because very few people get this opportunity. It is a game of cricket so there is not much pressure on us. The impact players rule is in its initial phase. We have to see that and take decisions that prove to be right. Russell, Narine, Gurbaz and Southee are our overseas players.

After having a below-average season in the IPL 2022, PBKS and KKR look for a good IPL 2023. The teams are new-look with new captains and new coaches. Shikhar Dhawan will lead PBKs, while Nitish Rana will captain the side in Shreyas Iyer’s absence. Toss coming at 3 PM as I Varun Malik, take you across this second game of the tournament.
IPL 2023, CSK vs GT match highlights: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 kicked off with an exciting match between defending champions Gujarat Titans and four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Gujarat Titans won the match by five wickets, thanks to a brilliant half-century by Shubman Gill and some crucial contributions from Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan in the slog overs.
Toss: Gujarat Titans won the toss and elected to field.
Debutants: Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Joshua Little made their IPL debut for CSK and Gujarat Titans, respectively.
Innovations: The sixteenth edition of the tournament includes several innovations, such as an ‘impact player’ who can replace a player in the starting XI at any time during the match. Teams can also announce the playing XIs after the toss instead of before.
CSK’s Innings: Ruturaj Gaikwad Shines with 92 runs
CSK won the toss and elected to bat first. Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad set the stage on fire with his magnificent 92-run knock off 50 balls, which included nine sixes and just four fours. Gaikwad’s knock helped CSK post a formidable 178/7 in 20 overs. Moeen Ali also contributed with a 17-ball 23, which included a flat six off Mohammad Shami on a free-hit ball. Legendary MS Dhoni also turned back the clock and hit a monstrous six over deep square leg to entertain the fans at Narendra Modi Stadium.
Gujarat’s Innings: Gill and Co. Chase Down the Target
In response, Gujarat Titans started on a high as Wriddhiman Saha smashed a couple of sixes to put pressure on Chennai. However, he failed to convert it into a big score and was dismissed for 25 off 16 balls. Sai Sudharshan came out to bat at number 3 as he replaced injured Kane Williamson as the Impact Player for the Titans. The southpaw also failed to convert a solid start into something big and was dismissed for 22.
While Gill stood strong and found boundaries at regular intervals to keep the scoreboard moving at a healthy rate. He scored 63 runs off 36 balls, which was laced with six fours and three sixes. The talented opener was dismissed by Tushar Deshpande, the first-ever Impact Player in IPL history. Gill went for a big shot but mistimed and got caught by Gaikwad.
Skipper Hardik Pandya also struggled to get going and was castled for 8 by his Indian teammate Ravindra Jadeja.23 runs were required from the last two overs as Deepak Chahar bowled the penultimate one, and 15 runs came off it. Rashid Khan, who spun his magic with the ball, showed his batting prowess by smashing a six and a four.
In the final over, Debutant Rajvardhan Hangargekar bowled with 8 runs to defend. He started with a wide, while Tewatia connected a six on the first legal delivery to make it a cakewalk, and then a straight drive on the second ball sealed the deal for the Titans.
Gujarat Titans Start on a Winning Note
Defending champions Gujarat Titans started their title defence with a crucial 5-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of Indian Premier League 2023. The match was filled with several thrilling moments, and fans were treated to some excellent cricket. The Gujarat Titans showed why they are the defending champions, while CSK will have to improve their performance in the upcoming matches to stay
India lost the third and final match of the ODI series against Australia by 21 runs in Chennai on Wednesday. Australia won the three-match series 2-1, highlighting the fact that India is far from being prepared for the World Cup. The Indian team choked under pressure from Australian spinners, who took six wickets between them and gave away only 86 runs in the last 20 overs. Chasing a strong target of 270 runs India got all out for 248 runs in 49.1 overs. Although australia had lost the first match of the series by five wickets, they literally show how to fightback .
Australian Spinners Steal the Show
The match turned out to be an anti-climax in the final 15 overs as Australian spinners Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar snared as many as six Indian wickets, giving away only 86 runs in the 20 overs between them. The Chepauk pitch became increasingly difficult to bat on as the game progressed, and post the 35th over in the Indian innings, it became tough to hit big strokes. Zampa’s figures of 4/45 against India made him the hero for the Aussies.
Once Zampa bowled a couple of googlies to force Hardik Pandya (40 off 40 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (1 off 33 balls) hit against the turn, the writing was on the wall. It was Zampa’s best figures against India and he certainly was the hero for the Aussies.
Incidentally, Australia were the last international team to beat India in a bilateral ODI series back in 2019. The score-line back then was 3-2. Since that series defeat four years back, India have won seven back-to-back bilateral ODI rubber at home.
India’s Inability to Dominate and Top-Order Failure
India’s top-order failed for the third game in a row, and they could have been blanked 3-0 in the series if Australia had scored at least 235 in the first ODI. The highest run-getter for India in the series was KL Rahul with 116 runs, which indicates India’s lack of form. Between overs 35 to 43, India managed only 31 runs, and that was where the game turned on its head. Skipper Rohit Sharma (30 off 17 balls) started well but played one pull shot too many to be holed out at deep square leg fence while an alert Alex Carey’s decision to convince Steve Smith into taking a DRS saw the back of Shubman Gill (37 off 49 balls)
Rahul (32 off 50 balls) joined Virat Kohli (54 off 72 balls) and the duo added 69 runs in 15.3 overs but were never able to dominate as such on a track that got slower with passage of time.
Kohli’s first boundary came in his 21st delivery, a pull shot off Agar and two balls later of Tamil Nadu he hit a regal six off Agar over extra cover.Rahul’s first boundary came in his 45th ball when he hit Zampa over his head for a four.
Next over, Starc fired from wide off crease but the length ball was hit for a straight six. However, a ball fired by Zampa into the blockhole was dug-out by Rahul but Abbot timed his jump well to hold onto it at the boundary.
Then it was the turn of Agar to quickly send back Kohli and the out-of-form Suryakumar Yadav (0) for his third first-ball duck in as many games. From 146 for 2, India had slumped to 185 for 6 when Pandya and Jadeja joined forces with the Australian close-in fielders making it infinitely difficult. But Pandya, however, maintained a 100-plus strike-rate despite tight bowling by the opposition.
Kuldeep Yadav’s Effort and Australia’s Tail Wag
A fine opening spell by Pandya and a probing effort by Kuldeep Yadav put a tight leash around the Australian batters before its tail wagged considerably to take the visitors to a fighting 269 all out in 49 overs after opting to bat first. While Pandya (3/44 in 8 overs) shaved off the top half, Kuldeep’s (3/56 in 10 overs) rhythm and guile on a helpful Chennai track was the biggest takeaway as the latter’s delivery to remove Carey was the ball of the series. It was a classical left-arm wrist spinner’s leg-break that beat the southpaw all ends up and Kuldeep’s ecstasy was there to be seen.
Australia’s classy batting backfooted India
India were in control after pegging Australia back at 138 for 5 but a 58-run stand between Carey and Marcus Stoinis for the sixth wicket and 42 for the eighth wicket between Sean Abbott (26) and Ashton Agar (17) took them close to 250 while Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa added 22 precious runs for the final wicket.
What looked like a good toss to win for Australia after Mitchell Marsh (47 off 47 balls) and Travis Head (33 off 31 balls) put on 68 for the opening stand didn’t seem so as Pandya bowled three different deliveries in his first three overs to completely seize the momentum in favour of the hosts.
David Warner (23 off 31 balls) and Marnus Labuschagne (28 off 45 balls) paid dearly for their indiscreet shot selection off Kuldeep’s bowling before Carey (38 off 46 balls) played his first innings of substance on the final day of a long near two-month tour.
Conclusion
India’s defeat to Australia in the ODI series highlights the team’s weakness in facing spin bowling and raises concerns about their preparedness for the upcoming World Cup. The series defeat after winning seven back-to-back bilateral ODI rubber at home indicates that there are too many loose ends that the Indian team needs to address.
